Comparison: HomePod 1, HomePod 2 and HomePod mini

A much-requested comparison between the three generations of HomePod: HomePod 1, HomePod 2, and HomePod mini.

In 2018, Apple introduced the first HomePod. Priced at €349, it was significantly more expensive than its competitors, and despite the quality sound and price drop to €329, it never failed to convince. Therefore, it debuted the HomePod mini in fall 2020 with a more affordable $99 price tag, and retired the first HomePod in March 2021. “Mini” is still a hit, although it won’t sound as powerful. and not suitable Dolby Atmos.

Apple has waited until 2023 to relaunch the “big” HomePod with Thread and Matter support, a temperature/humidity sensor, an updated S7 chip, and a second generation with very minor design changes. All at the previous price.

It’s time to get to the heart of the matter, and see how the three smart speakers currently sold by Apple compare.

When it comes to the basic audio features of the HomePod 2, there is not much difference from the original HomePod. The two models differ in smart functions, connectivity and sensors.

The only difference in sound quality noted by Apple is that computational audio is now “enhanced” with system detection for real-time tuning, while the original HomePod and HomePod mini have a simpler version.

This is where the HomePod 2 starts to differ from the original. The new smart speaker supports Matter and Thread protocols, integrates the S7 chip and the U1 chip to improve iPhone transfers, and a temperature/humidity sensor like the iOS 16.3-enabled HomePod mini.

HomePod 2 and HomePod mini also come with iPhone-like voice recognition with iOS 16.4, which is expected to arrive this spring.

The touch panel on the top of the HomePod 2 has also been redesigned, similar to the HomePod mini, but the difference is not that big.

On the other hand, you’ll notice that Apple has downgraded the WiFi chip from 802.11ac to 802.11n and doesn’t support Bluetooth 5.3. Perhaps because this technology is only used for installation, not for playing music.

Microphones and speakers

There are also some tweaks to the speakers and microphones. First, Apple points out that the high-excursion woofer is larger. The new HomePod has a 4-inch woofer, while the size of the original was never disclosed by the firm.

Among other changes, the original’s 7-row tweeter has been simplified to 5 for the HomePod, and the far-field microphones have been reduced from 6 to 4. We hope that the sound quality will not be lost.

Microphones 4 + Built-in low-frequency calibration microphone for automatic bass correction 6 4

Apple needs to make sure it has the same or better sound quality, output and input as the original HomePod, which has fewer tweeters and microphones. It describes the HomePod 2 as offering “immersive, high-quality sound.”

Space-filling bass.
Thanks to the long-throw woofer, HomePod delivers deep and rich bass. Its powerful motor vibrates the diaphragm up to 20mm, while the bass EQ microphone adjusts low frequencies in real time. The result: incredibly sharp bass that occupies the entire space. Explosion.

Rising heights in towers.
Five tweeters are distributed on the HomePod base with beamforming. They optimize high frequencies to produce clear, crisp and detailed sound. So you can appreciate all the subtleties of crystal-clear sounds and instruments in detail. It was like you were there.

Colors and sizes

The new HomePod 2023 is almost identical in size (and design). It is slightly smaller and lighter than its predecessor.

The HomePod 2 comes in white and midnight, although the latter is very close to the gray of the original. If you want a pop of color, the HomePod mini remains the only option.

Height 168 mm 172 mm 84.3 mm
Width 142 mm 142 mm 97.9 mm
Weight 2.3 kg 2.5 kg 345 g

The HomePod 2 came in at €349 ($299), the same price as the original. Meanwhile, the HomePod mini has gone up to €109, up from €99 previously.

Knowing that the HomePod 2’s price is a major barrier to purchase for customers, we’re confused about its pricing position.
