At the beginning of the year, Honor distinguished itself with its first foldable smartphone, the Magic V. Now it offers a successor to Magic Vs, which bills itself as an updated version of the device. the main advantage is that it will indeed be sold in France. However, there is no need to be distracted: the smartphone will not go on sale in France before the first half of 2023. On the pricing side, uncertainty is also in order as Honor will reveal this item only when the device is launched. But since Magic Vs starts at just over €1,000 in China, we can expect a price of around €1,500.
The smartphone will bring some life to a market largely occupied by Samsung and its Galaxy Z Fold 4. Because, like the Magic V, it is a “book” format model in which Honor has improved some elements. Especially benefiting from these improvements is the weight of the device, as it goes from 288 to 261 grams (263 g for the Samsung model), its thickness is now limited to 6.1 mm when open. .
We find out what the power of Magic V is. The fold of the Magic Vs is actually quite discreet under the finger, and its hinge is designed so that when the device is closed, there is no visible gap between the two parts of the screen. A very nice point, even if the whole remains massive (160.3 x 72.6 x 12.9 mm). This Oled panel is pleasing to the eye on a 7.9-inch diagonal with a size of 1984 x 2272 pixels, a 6.45-inch external screen (1080 x 2560 pixels, also Oled and 1200 nit brightness) allows you to use the device indoors. . It should be noted that the hinge offers significant resistance, for example, enough to prevent the smartphone from accidentally opening in a bag. But in return, it does not allow “semi-open” use, like Flex Mode in Samsung. We also regret that no IP certification guarantees the device’s water resistance, and compatibility with a special stylus is an advantage of the Ultimate version reserved for the Chinese market.
The promise of generous autonomy
The design of the smartphone is otherwise classic but effective. There are two finish options, one with a frosted glass look that doesn’t pick up fingerprints, and the other with a glossy finish that’s definitely dirtier. On the back, we note that there is a photo unit inspired by the 54-megapixel main sensor, which is quite efficient in the smartphone in question, despite some difficulties, especially in low light. We couldn’t test it under these conditions, but we hope the brand has improved its copy from one mobile generation to the next. In any case, this camera is complemented by an 8 Mpx sensor with a 50-megapixel ultra-wide-angle module and a telephoto lens that allows x3 zoom. A versatile formula on paper adopted by Samsung (with various definitions).
Under the hood, the Magic Vs hides the same Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chip as the Galaxy Z Fold 4. The Qualcomm chip is associated with at least 8 GB of RAM and, above all, a 5000 mAh battery – divided into two elements. device. High capacity in the folding smartphone market and we hope it will give good autonomy to the terminal. With at least a 66W power supply, we’re confident it will charge in about an hour.
Honor delivers a decidedly high-end smartphone here that should try to stand out from its current rivals at a slightly more affordable price point. It will be accompanied by a MagicOS interface that wraps Android 12, which is expected to be updated to Android 13 with the release of the terminal. An element that is even more important because by then other brands will enter the dance and strengthen the market that is currently monopolized by Samsung.
