#SessionLive x 2 with Maia Barouh and El Comunero – RFI Musique

Singer, flutist, author, composer and arranger, Maia Barouh He is a unique artist who mixes the songs of his Japanese fathers with French-Japanese rap, groove, electro, song with great freedom. One of his specialties is his great vocal technique – a little-known flute from an island in the south of Japan, percussive and brash. The German press calls him a “punk shaman”. Maia has this exceptional ability to create impossible concoctions. Here his unique and recognizable style is born.

Following her father, Pierre Barouh, Maia took up music, playing instruments such as the piano, guitar and drums at a very early age. But the flute was his first weapon at work. He started his career at the age of 16 in the Tokyo subway, playing flute in rock bands, playing saxophone in a Japanese street band, accompanying drag queens, accompanying strippers, Guinean and Brazilian griot musicians… Before being founded. his own band, based on electric bass and drums, where his singing will be the centerpiece, with which he will perform concerts and tour the archipelago.

After an 11-year career in Japan, a meeting and collaboration with the famous producer Martin Meissonnier (Fela Kuti, Robert Plant & Jimmy Page, Khaled, Don Cherry, Manu Dibango…) will bring him to Paris to produce the album “Kodama» will travel all over Europe for 5 years before preparing his new project.AIDA“. AIDA means between two in Japanese. It’s an album that explores her Franco-Japanese identity, Asian racism, migration, and feminism.

Produced by Maia over several years, directed by MAJiKer (an English producer known for his work with Camille or Berywam), the main goal of his research was to compose from a base of singing and flute and find a natural way to mix the two. working with rapper Elea Braaz to find the correctness of French lyrics in tunes of Japanese ancestry, or to make French sound Japanese in rap.
