Apple may face a shortage by the end of 2022

IPHONE 14. With its main Chinese factory affected by Covid, Apple expects to be able to introduce fewer iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max later in the year.

[Mise à jour du 14 novembre 2022 à 16h36] Apple has already warned that iPhone 14 Pro shipments will be lower than expected. Taiwan’s Foxconn group, the main subcontractor of the brand, faced the arrest of one of its factories in China in early November. According to a JP Morgan note published by the American website AppleInsider, although it is difficult to estimate how much this factory is affected, “the sudden and rapid increase in delivery times for the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max is an indication of this. The supply shortage is expected to continue until the end of 2022. ”

JP Morgan estimates that iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max shipments will decline by 5 million in the last quarter, but the volume of iPhones sold in the first quarter of 2023 is expected to increase from 56 million to 61 million. The volume of iPhones shipped for 2023 is expected to decrease by 4% compared to last year, reaching 237 million versus 239 million.

The iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max sit alongside the iPhone 14 and the new larger format: the iPhone 14 Plus. Apple unveiled four new iPhones during its keynote on September 7, 2022. Among the expected new features, the always-on display will equip the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max. Already available on Android smartphones or the Apple Watch Series 5, this technology allows you to display widgets such as the weather or information from the Health app, even when the screen is locked. The locked screen therefore remains visible and can be viewed at a glance. On the other hand, when the smartphone is down or deep in the pocket, it turns dark to protect the battery. These always-on LTPO displays have an adaptive refresh rate that varies from 1 to 120 Hz, compared to 10 to 120 Hz on the previous iPhone 13 Pro. It is this difference that allows the smartphone to consume almost no energy when the operating mode is always active.

Along with the always-on display, one of the big new features of the iPhone 14 Pro is a new notch around the front camera, called the dynamic island. It integrates new hardware and software to enable data display. This modular notch presents music being listened to, Airpods in use and ongoing FaceTime calls among others. The iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max include the most significant new features: Apple intends to better differentiate its range and highlight the Pro ranges at higher prices and therefore more profitable for the Apple brand.

While speakers during Apple’s presentation mentioned that iPhone prices will not increase between 2021 and 2022, this only applies to the US market. In terms of design, the iPhone 14 is similar to its predecessor, the iPhone 13, with straight edges and rounded corners, reminiscent of the iPhone 4. The Cupertino company has worked on new colors for the iPhone 14. The purple color has already been tested in the spring of 2021. It returns to Apple’s palette on the iPhone 12, on the other hand, the blue color will only be available on the 14 and 14 Plus, not the iPhone 14 Pro. The colors planned by Apple are:

  • iPhone 14 and 14 Plus blue, violet, midnight (black), starlight (white), and red;
  • iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max in deep purple, gold, silver and space black.

iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max, iPhone 14 and 14 Plus

The basic iPhone 14 and its Plus version offer the A15 chip, which is available only in the revised and improved version of the iPhone 13. This is the first time that the Pro versions have a more powerful chip than the other versions. This is to reduce costs for Apple and solve some supply issues.

Therefore, Apple rejected the iPhone 14 with a 6.1-inch screen iPhone 14, as well as iPhone 14 Pro with a 6.1-inch screen, iPhone 14 Pro Max with a 6-inch screen, 7-inch and iPhone 14 with the brand. the new version, the iPhone 14 Plus, also has a 6.7-inch screen.

  • iPhone 14 Pro Max: 29 hours of video playback.

According to the first tests, the batteries of the new iPhones are particularly efficient. In the autonomy of video streaming, the iPhone 14s performs better than its competitors. The iPhone 14 Pro Max lasts 22 hours and 57 minutes, ahead of the iPhone 14 Plus by 22 hours and 37 minutes. Next comes the Galaxy Fold with 19 hours and 10 minutes and the Galaxy A42 4G with 18 hours and 14 minutes.

Accident detection and SOS by satellite

First introduced on the Apple Watch Series 8, the SOS via satellite option also joins the new iPhone 14 models. It allows you to send a text message to help even in an area with poor or non-existent network coverage. However, this option is currently only available in the US and Canada. Another option, called crash detection, makes it possible to notify emergency services in the event of a car accident. The functionality should be further improved by Apple, help was called when the users of these smartphones do not face traffic accidents, but occur in attractions such as roller coasters, the Wall Street Journal.

No USB-C yet

The iPhone 14 is still not equipped with a USB-C port, as required by European regulations for charging. Apple’s Lightning system still works on the iPhone 14, although some rumors suggest that the iPhone may no longer have a charging port and therefore charge via MagSafe, Apple’s wireless charging system. That assumption was dispelled by Apple’s keynote. So, the USB-C port will only come to iPhone 15 models from 2023.
