Samsung strongly believes in the foldable smartphone. It is proven by its early commitment to the issue, which has made it a market leader in its infancy. The newspaper writes that the South Korean firm recently held an event called Mobile Experience Business. TheElec. On this occasion, he specifically explained the topic.

Samsung spoke directly to its suppliers, telling them that the sector was about to take on a new dimension. According to the newspaper’s sources, folding devices currently make up 1% of the market. Therefore, a lot needs to be done to convert new consumers.

According to the company, the compound annual growth rate could reach 80% by 2025. It also claims that 90% of current foldable smartphone owners will stick with this format for their next purchase.

Well filled specification

Samsung reiterated the challenges that suppliers will face to support this democratization. The specifications call for the devices to be lighter, thinner and make the bend as invisible as possible, so the firm asked them to use lighter and more durable materials. The development of better-thought-out applications for the 4:3 aspect ratio of the screen was also noted.

Samsung also wants to offer an experience worthy of premium photography. It’s true that folding smartphones never shined in this exercise. Therefore, the on-board sensors need to justify the still very high prices of these models. This is even more true with devices like the Galaxy Z Fold, the latest version of which still costs €1,799 at launch. Samsung also explained that it had to make photo compromises on the latter due to limitations on the thickness of its device.

Additional stylus

If a clamshell smartphone is inherently more compact, the “booklet” format should encompass more uses. Once unlocked, the big screen should be more productive. The firm has announced that it wants the next devices in the Galaxy Z Fold series to have a slot for the S-Pen. A request has already been made for the Galaxy Z Fold 4 that supports the stylus. This kind of integration makes sense because the format lends itself perfectly. Therefore, we can expect changes from the next generation.

Apple works

As for competition, Samsung expects Apple to enter the sector from 2024, but not with smartphones. The Cupertino company would initially be interested in this technology for a tablet or laptop.

As Apple dominates this segment, it is a logical statement and should be one step ahead. Given the success of the latest iPhone 14s (especially the Pros), it can probably expect the market to grow further.
