10 most anticipated innovations in 2023

From a popular city car to a luxury SUV, discover a first look at ten yet-to-be-launched new electric models to celebrate 2023.

BMW i5

BMW empowers customers to choose the engine that’s right for them. Each new model is available with petrol, diesel, hybrid and 100% electric. So in 2022, after the X1 and Series 7, it will be the turn of the 5 Series to have the equivalent of the i. Logically named the i5, this stylish road car will therefore be close to the 5 Series, with a few styling cues that will make the car more aerodynamic. So the silhouette will remain classic, a radically different choice from Mercedes with EQE. We have to find in the guts of the i5 the technical elements (motors, batteries) already visible in the other i. The greatest autonomy should be more than 600 km.

Citroen ë-C3

At the end of September, chevrons presented the return of Citroen as a popular brand and the Oli concept with the Stellantis door in collaboration with Fiat. The manufacturer wants to democratize access to the electric car. The first stage presentation will be based on the new generation C3, which will take place later this year. Two versions were being developed: one with a technical sheet similar to the one we know in the rest of the group, therefore with an autonomy of 350-400 km and, above all, an economic ë-C3 with disabled services. Dacia Spring. The working base is the new “low-cost” C3 that’s on sale in India, but according to our colleagues at Argus, adapting it to Europe will require more work than expected.

Fiat 600

Between the 500 and the Tipo there is a huge gap in the Fiat range. While the firm is a heavyweight in this market in Europe, it has completely abandoned the B segment of versatile city models. The manufacturer is finally set to set out again to conquer it, thanks to a new model that may adopt the 600 name. The car will be an electric city SUV, about 4.10 meters long. It will share its technical base with the Jeep Avenger with 156 horsepower and a range of 400 km. Both cars will be assembled together in Poland. The Fiat boss had been planning an unveiling at the beginning of the new year, but so far no prototype has been seen in any form.

Ford Cougar

Ford has big ambitions for electric cars. Still, line electrification looks like a breeze! So far, on the passenger car side, there is only the Mach-E, priced above €60,000. The rollout will be phased in in 2023, with a new model (left in the teaser here) initially slated for the European market. This is a compact SUV that was created under a contract with Volkswagen. As such, it will be based on the MEB platform used by the ID.4. But this new car, which could revive the Cougar name, will be produced at the Ford plant in Cologne. Technical characteristics promise to be close to those of VW, which offers up to 530 km of autonomy.

Hyundai Kona

Having updated the Kia Niro, we await the arrival of the second generation of its technical cousin, the Kona. Logically, the model should not evolve as much technically as the Kia, which has a 204 hp engine and a 64.8 kWh battery with a range of 463 km. It remains a very good value in the electric city SUV market. And Kona will make its own aesthetic revolution. The first one was already original, the next one will be even more so. Front and back, for example, will be cut with a thick light bar.

MG Cyberster

MG Cyberster

Now flying the Chinese flag, the MG brand has not forgotten the British history of the label. So it will be an MG roadster again! And like the company’s new productions, this softtop convertible will be electric. The car concept was announced in 2021. At the time, MG promised a 0-100 km/h time of less than 3 seconds and a very long range of 800 km. The production version is already on sale (in August 2022) and will be fully introduced in 2023.

New Mini

Mini Hatch will split. The brand is developing a completely new generation dedicated to electrics, which will be produced in China in collaboration with Great Wall (thermal redevelopment and assembly in the UK). This change will be an opportunity to develop the design. Of course, the silhouette and strong elements, such as the round optics, will be preserved, but the designers will take some liberties with certain parts, such as the lights. The center circle on the plane will be XXL. If the brand has already shown camouflaged prototypes (enough to hinder shell hunters), the spec sheet hasn’t said anything yet. We expect to have better autonomy, the current level is reduced at 233 km.

Nissan Chill Out

The first mass-produced electric Nissan will not be the third generation. The compact Leaf will indeed disappear to make way for the crossover. This was preceded by the Chill-Out concept car (photo), which looks like a coupe SUV with streamlined shapes and smooth surfaces. The model will receive the new CMF-EV platform, which was inaugurated by the big brother Ariya and then adopted by the Megane E-Tech. It will be assembled at the British factory in Sunderland to replace the Leaf. But we’ll have to wait until the end of 2023 to see that.

Porsche Macan

Here’s to Arlesian! The electric Macan, which has been promised for years, continues to retreat. Expected in 2021, then in 2022, to hit the roads in 2024, should be introduced towards the end of 2023. The development software part is being pulled down by Cariad, a private subsidiary of the Volkswagen group. Porsche is wasting time… although the firm is struggling to produce the Taycan due to a semiconductor shortage. The electric Macan will have a new base dedicated to electrics, PPE and more dynamic styling than the thermal with accents of an SUV coupe.

Renault R5

So yes, the new electric R5 will be in dealerships in early 2024. But it will be presented in 2023, in the second half. Renault should even open its order books in the fall. A few weeks ago, the Diamond brand started experimenting with mules, that is, the technical base of the car hidden under the Clio body. Prototypes with a final silhouette should not be long. Renault has promised that the production version is a neo-retro version of the 5 born in 1972. 100 kW unit. But the smaller battery version will allow for a more attractive base price.
